The Kursaal

The Kursaal has been an icon of Southend for over 100 years since it opened in 1901. It was one of the world’s first purpose-built amusement parks as well as the largest fairground in the south of England during its early years. The Kursaal is noted for its unique main building that features a distinctive dome designed by Campbell Sherin and is considered as the principal architectural monument to Southend’s Edwarian boom period. The venue’s name is German, which means ‘Cure Hall’ and appears to have been adapted to mean a place for healthy amusement.

During its heyday, The Kursaal was a popular venue for rock legend gigs and fun family days out. However, the venue faced a steady decline during the 1970s which led to the closure of its outdoor amusements in 1973 and main building in 1986. It was later reopened in 1998 with a bowling alley, a casino, and other amusements. Unfortunately the bowling alley closed permanently in 2019 and was followed by the permanent closure of Rendezvous casino in 2020. This currently leaves a Tesco Express store as the building’s last remaining occupant.
