Southend Pier and Railway

The Southend Pier and Railway was the first pier railway in the country. It opened it the 1890’s and played a role through both of the world wars. It is a 3 feet narrow gauge railway, and it runs for 1.25 miles along the 1.34 miles length of Southend Pier.

The train service in the Southend Pier and Railway is provided by two diesel trains, although it was once electrified. Every train has a diesel-hydraulic locomotive at the southern end and five trailer coaches end. The train runs every half-hour but sometimes, a two train service is operated with a 15-minute interval.

JetVac Cleaning Provides Info On Southend Pier and Railway, Southend On Sea

Its History

In the early 19th century, Southend was a holiday destination for a lot of Londoners because it was believed that spending time by the sea has health benefits. And so, guests would arrive by boats or by Thames steamer. At some point, this became a problem because boats can only dock during high tides. So, guests would opt to visit other nearby resorts. Lord Mayor of the City of London, Sir William Heygate led a campaign to build a pier to allow boats to land on Southend during high tides and low tides.

In 1830, the pier was built to employ a horse tramway. This pier was made with wood, and in 1890, it was reconstructed to an iron pier and was installed with an electric tramway that ran the full length by 1891. However, it was closed because it deteriorated in October 1978, and it reopened on May 2, 1986 with two new diesel trains.
