Shoebury East Beach

Shoeburyness has storied military history, particularly from the Second World War, and is home to two Blue Flag winning beach destinations, West Beach and East Beach. West Beach, or more commonly referred to as Common Beach, is nearest to Southend. East Beach is the more popular destination, for its Blue Flag-winning stretch of sandy beach and costal grasslands. It is set away from the main seafront area, which makes a perfect location for quiet picnics, family barbecues, sunbathing, relaxing. Watersports enthusiasts also come to the area as Shoebury East Beach offers ideal conditions for kitesurfing and paddle boarding.

History

Shoebury East Beach was once home to a massive defence boom built in 1944 during the Second World War to prevent enemy ships or submarines from gaining access into the River Thames. After the war, a large portion of the boom was dismantled but a mile-long stretch still reaching out to the Thames Estuary. This left East Beach sandwiched between the Pig’s Bay MoD site and the former Shoeburyness Artillery barracks.
