Focal Point Gallery is located at The Forum, Elmer Square, Southend-on-Sea, Essex SS1 1NB, United Kingdom. It is a free public art gallery based in the centre of Southend-on-Sea. They welcome all visitors and aim to make every visit as enjoyable as possible!

About Focal Point Gallery

Focal Point Gallery displays contemporary art that challenges us to think and feel differently about locality, our sense of self and the importance of communities. It curates and commissions an on-going programme of artist moving image. It seeks to engage with a wide range of local community groups, schools, young people and children.

Focal Point Gallery produces up to seven gallery exhibitions each year with the use of lens-based media. In 2013, a series of permanent commissions by Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Mike Nelson, Allen Ruppersberg and Tris Vonna-Michell were installed. These were supported by a capital project funded by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Arts Council England.

The Gallery receives regular funding from Arts Council England and Arts Council England because these are two of the organization’s national portfolios funded organizations. They also receive additional funding from other trusts and foundations and collaborates with partners. This include arts agencies and other organizations to co-produce projects.

Upcoming Exhibitions

Some of the upcoming exhibitions of Focal Point Gallery this year is the Death of a Village by Annabel Taylor-Munt on these dates: July 24 to September 10, 2021, A View without the Bridge by Janette Parris on these dates: July 25 to October 25, 2021, and On the Island by Daniel and Clara on these dates: August 30 to September 10, 2021.

Learning and Engagement

Focal Point Gallery engages people of all ages in current debates around contemporary art. They offer a variety of free or low-cost cultural activities like public talks, curator’s tours, artist-led workshops, off-site externally funded projects and events connected in contemporary visual practice.

They work with groups like children and families, community groups, further and higher education students, home education groups, adults and older people, schools, young artists’ groups, and volunteers.

Facilities

There are Accessibility facilities in Focal Point Gallery such as disabled access, disabled toilets, facilities for hearing impaired, facilities for visually impaired, and wheelchairs. Credit cards are also accepted with no fee and with charge. These is also an on-site catering and on-site light refreshments. There are baby changing facilities, education or study area and guided tours for groups. There is a gift shop and public toilets.

The bus routes 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 29 stop at the Southend-On-Sea Victoria Station Interchange. This is a few minutes’ walk from the gallery through the High Street.
